Went for Grocery shopping?
Bought a little too much because of the great deals or whatever reason?
Not to worry, says our inner-voice, will put it in the refrigerator, will use as needed.
But, all the food items have a life-span/shelf-life even in a refrigerator.
Let us all take a look at the shelf-life of the common food items.
Remember, it is better to throw away the spoilt food than to spoil your own health.
Think, are those food items of any good to us after so many days in the refrigerator?
Be it any deal or great discounts, buy grocery as per the requirement, or if you know, you can utilize them during their shelf-life.
So, here we go:
One can store eggs in the refrigerator for a period of 3-5 weeks easily; yes, but they must be uncooked. And any dish made with eggs may last for around 3-4 days in the refrigerator, or for longer time if kept in the freezer.
Milk is something that is full of bacteria, and is sure a good medium for more bacteria to grow quickly. If you think the milk smells bad, it is time to toss it out. In the refrigerator, it may survive for more than a week, but follow the expiration date if any mentioned at all on the carton. Make it a rule, not to store milk for more than 2-3 days, it does not taste good after so many days.
Make it a point, to dip all the fresh fruits and vegetables in water for at-least one hour. Here, I am talking about the ones that you generally wash. For example, apple, pear, grapes, capsicum, carrots, etc, not the fruits like banana, papaya, which you are going to peel anyway. It helps to clean away the pesticides, if not completely, at least a little etc.
Do not eat or cook something that smells bad/pungent or even is rotted from a corner. I read somewhere, if fungus starts to form on anything we eat, you do no good by cutting the corner with fungus, and eating the rest. Never do that, toss it away. Rule is to buy little as per the requirement, so that you do not end up wasting the food.
Butter in your refrigerator, can be good for around a week. Toss it away if it gives out an unpleasant or sour smell or taste. Yes, you can freeze it too, to keep it good for longer duration, but it surely plays with the real taste.
The best way to look at a cheese that has gone bad, is to check if it has started to get any mold or fungus. You can also keep a check on the best before date. Hard cheese like cheddar cheese, has a longer shelf-life, even mozzarella for that matter. However, soft cheese, like cottage cheese turns bad really quick. A little better than cottage cheese is the cream cheese, which lasts a little longer.
You must consume the cooked chicken within 5 days, if you have stored in the refrigerator. But, remember, it must be thoroughly cooked. You can keep the uncooked chicken in the freezer for longer durations, but yes, it may change the taste.
